Do you have patches of red, flakey skin over your body? If you do, then you likely have psoriasis, which is an autoimmune disorder that is caused by T-cells becoming overactive and setting off other immune responses leading to psoriasis symptoms. August is Psoriasis Awareness month, so SCS Physicians wants to teach you how to manage your psoriasis symptoms so that you can start to have healthy skin again. Luckily, there are a few simple tips for treating psoriasis.
Reduce Stress
In some cases, constant and severe stress can cause psoriasis to flare up. This can turn into a vicious cycle considering psoriasis can be a stressful condition to live with. So, you need to think of ways to reduce stress in your life. Yoga and meditation may be effective activities to help reduce stress and potentially reduce your risk of a psoriasis flare-up.
Keep Your Skin Hydrated
One of the most effective ways to treat psoriasis is to keep your skin hydrated and moist. You want to choose a moisturizer that is suited best for your skin. The dermatologists at SCS Physicians will recommend you a moisturizer depending on the severity of your condition. There are many types that are made specifically to treat psoriasis. Make sure that you choose a moisturizer that is fragrance-free since fragrances contain chemicals that can irritate the skin.
Watch What You Eat and Drink
For some people with psoriasis, certain foods and drinks can cause symptoms to flare. Work with your dermatologist to understand if this may be the case for you and, if so, which food or drinks you may want to avoid. Particularly for those on psoriasis medication, limiting alcohol intake can be helpful. Red meat and fatty snacks have also been shown to increase some psoriasis patients’ risk of flare-ups.
